No entanto, o documento usou o termo <em>volt equivalente<\/em> para se referir a um el\u00e9tron-volt.<\/p>\n<p> Nos Estados Unidos, o conhecimento da f\u00edsica de part\u00edculas avan\u00e7ou e passamos a utilizar a unidade Bevatron (BeV), que equivalia a 10 <sup>9<\/sup> eV (o B veio do termo ingl\u00eas <em>bilh\u00e3o<\/em> ). Mas em 1948, a Uni\u00e3o Internacional de F\u00edsica Pura e Aplicada (IUPAP) rejeitou a sua utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o e em vez disso utilizou a unidade gigaelectrovolt (GeV), aplicando assim o prefixo correspondente a este m\u00faltiplo (giga \u00e9 o prefixo que significa 10 <sup>9<\/sup> ).<\/p>\n<p> Atualmente, o el\u00e9tron-volt \u00e9 a unidade mais utilizada nos ramos da f\u00edsica relacionados ao estudo de part\u00edculas, como a f\u00edsica at\u00f4mica ou a f\u00edsica nuclear.
