O experimento de Torricelli consistiu em medir a press\u00e3o atmosf\u00e9rica por meio de um tubo de merc\u00fario.<\/p>\n<p> Mais precisamente, Torricelli encheu completamente um tubo de 1 m de comprimento com merc\u00fario, o tubo foi fechado em uma das extremidades.<\/p>\n<p> Ele ent\u00e3o inverteu o tubo sobre um recipiente aberto cheio de merc\u00fario. Portanto, a extremidade fechada do tubo estava fora do recipiente e a extremidade aberta estava dentro do recipiente.<\/p>\n<p> Em teoria, invertendo o tubo, todo o l\u00edquido deveria ser despejado no recipiente grande. A press\u00e3o que o ar exercia na superf\u00edcie do merc\u00fario era maior do que a press\u00e3o que o merc\u00fario exercia sobre o ar, de modo que o merc\u00fario em contato com o ar n\u00e3o poderia subir mais. E, portanto, a coluna de merc\u00fario dentro do tubo tamb\u00e9m n\u00e3o poderia descer mais.<\/p>\n<p> A partir desta experi\u00eancia, o mil\u00edmetro de merc\u00fario foi adotado como a nova unidade de press\u00e3o, pois foi demonstrado que as press\u00f5es poderiam ser medidas em colunas de merc\u00fario.
